Cologne again saw the invasion of Orgatec and thousands of visitors from around the world ready to embrace the new product offerings, trends and innovations furniture manufacturers came to flaunt. Although a smaller exhibition than two years ago the show featured over 600 manufacturers, from the large European and American heavyweights to the smaller studio manufacturers, all striving to showcase their products new and old to the industry.
The likes of Vitra, K+N, Bene, Herman Miller and Interstuhl stamped their mark with larger than life stands as if to flex their muscles in the shadow of a tough economic climate. With the absence of some of the leading bands, smaller manufacturers cleverly utilised their less indulgent marketing budgets with clean focused stands to display their ranges.
In terms of fashions; sit-stand working and bench desking continued to prevail as it did two years ago. Highback modular breakout seating seemed to be a new trend this year with the success of Vitra's Alcove influencing many of the larger manufacturers portfolios. Sedus, Haworth, Nurus, Connection and Allermuir all dedicated large proportions of their footprint to similar systems, with Bene's Parcs system dominating their 800sqm pitch. Task chairs however continued to be a key focus, particularly for the big names who wheeled out their creations onto centre stage ready for the main performance. The halls at Koelnmesse were adorned with vibrant and sometimes neon colours on an underlying white background. Colour was prominent this year moving away from the more stark feel of 2 years ago. Vitra's citizen office concept was dressed in soft pastels whilst Unifor continued to experiment with unique wood finishes and even a metallic appearance executive desk. The colour frenzy was headlined by the fascinating colourcourage concept by Lars Contzen concept which uses colours that are 'perfectly harmonised' together to create vivid interior schemes.
Designers, specifiers and procurers can expect some interesting and exciting brochures and presentations from suppliers in the coming months which will introduce the products in comprehensive detail.
